Sandlot

Sandlot was created out of a desire to activate an unused portion of the Harbor Point site, get city residents and tourists acquainted with the growing neighborhood, and provide a sneak peek of the future programming that would be possible once the area was redeveloped into Point Park, a 4.5-acre open green space.

An ultimately temporary installation within the future footprint of Point Park, every aspect of Sandlot was designed to leave minimal impact on the site. Design strategies were aimed at creating a destination-driven, context-specific open event space that used reclaimed materials with rich texture and a simple spatial vocabulary. The various programmable spaces included a hammock lounge area, a climbable play sculpture, a custom swing set, a covered pavilion, and plenty of beach sand.

The family-friendly, summer leisure ambiance provided by outdoor games like beach volleyball and bocce, food festivals, holiday celebrations, and music performances was complemented by comfort food and drinks served from retrofitted shipping containers and a vintage Airsteam trailer. Over the course of Sandlot’s six-year run, “Baltimore’s Beach” became a beloved go-to hotspot for thousands of visitors each summer.
